Dutch defense minister visits Fort Hood

WEST FORT HOOD — Officials from the Royal Netherlands air force uncased the colors of the 302nd Squadron during a Monday afternoon ceremony attended by the Dutch minister of defense and commander of the Dutch air force.

The new unit replaces the Joint Netherlands Training Detachment, which trained Dutch soldiers and airmen under Fort Hood's 21st Cavalry Brigade. The reactivation of the squadron solidifies the relationship between the allies, said Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

"The Netherlands greatly values the essential contribution of the United States," she said. "It boosts our military effectiveness to react to global threats."

The Dutch have been training at Fort Hood since 1996 using Apaches, Chinooks and utilizing the post's Air Assault School. For more on the new unit, read tomorrow's Killeen Daily Herald.
