Engineers prepare for deployment

Posted

As III Corps troops return to Fort Hood, the 510th Company, 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, is preparing for a late spring deployment to Afghanistan.

The company expects to perform route-clearance duties, said Capt. Michael Maguire, company commander.

“We’re a clearance company … it’s what we have the equipment to do and what we’re expected to do,” Maguire said.

The company also possesses an area clearance element, which clears an open ground space, as opposed to a specific route. At this time, the company is preparing to mainly perform route-clearance missions.

These missions result in freedom of movement for Afghan and U.S. units and eliminate the threat of roadside bombs.

The company last deployed in February 2013.

This deployment will be about nine months.

“We’ve been doing standard training,” Maguire said. Their main training event will be a trip to the National Training Center, several months before the deployment.

Brigade headquarters is looking toward its own Afghanistan deployment, but no orders have been

announced by the Defense Department, according to brigade public affairs.

13th Sustainment Command

The sustainment unit is currently preparing for potential deployments, though no specific dates or locations are confirmed.

“The thing that will most occupy us in 2014 is preparing for the upcoming deployments of all of the major headquarters within the 13th (Sustainment). Our units are preparing for deployment and developing courses of action to maintain the level of support here at Fort Hood and across III Corps,” said Brig. Gen. Clark W. LeMasters Jr., commander of the unit.

The unit plans to maintain its momentum following its 2013 deployments, while continually preparing families for separation.

“We are always ready and always prepping in anticipation of a possible upcoming deployment,” said Capt. Monika Comeaux, unit public affairs officer.

Most recently, the 151st Movement Control Team, 49th Movement Control Battalion, deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan, earlier this month.

The team replaced the 383rd Movement Control Team, out of Fort Polk, La.
