Harlan VanWinkle

Retired Army Major Harlan "Rip" VanWinkle talks about his experiences.

Editor’s Note: The Herald recently interviewed retired U.S. Army Maj. Harlan “Rip” VanWinkle for a segment in our 2019 Salute to Service, a Veterans Day special section. However, VanWinkle had more war stories to share. This story also includes Richard VanWinkle, known around the house as “Little Rip,” who is also a retired Special Forces soldier.

SALADO — Retired U.S. Army Maj. Harlan “Rip” VanWinkle was at a Special Forces base camp in Vietnam on Jan. 29, 1968, looking forward to going back home to his wife in Okinawa, Japan, when he got a frantic radio call for help.
