FORT HOOD — Officials Tuesday released the name of a soldier who died Saturday from an apparent gunshot wound at his off-post residence in Killeen.

Pfc. Elvis Lee Bingham, 35, was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m. Saturday by Bell County Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin.

Bingham, of Gainesville, Ga., entered active-duty service in May 2012 as a horizontal construction engineer. He was assigned to the 43rd Engineer Company, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, since October 2012.

Bingham deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from June to February. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
