FORT HOOD — Post officials have released the name of a soldier who died Monday from an apparent gunshot wound at his on-post residence.

Dillon Lee Mitchell, 30, a first lieutenant with 3rd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since October 2013, joined the Army in 2008. His home of record is listed as Berrien Springs, Mich.

Mitchell, a former enlisted soldier, deployed to Iraq from October 2009 to September 2010.

Mitchell's awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal and Parachutist Badge.

Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation, Fort Hood officials said.
