FORT HOOD — The unusually cool weather on Tuesday brought the “sound of freedom” from Fort Hood, rattling some windows and causing some concern among area residents.

According to Fort Hood spokesman Tyler Broadway, there are several units currently training on post. The most likely cause of the loud “booms” heard by residents is artillery fire, the sound of which can be carried for miles in certain weather conditions.

The 3rd Cavalry Regiment Field Artillery Squadron is currently on the range and is expected to be training through Friday. The 1st Air Cavalry Brigade will be conducting air gunnery training through today and units from the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment will be conducting small arms training on ranges through Friday.
