FORT HOOD — Soldiers with 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, are conducting gunnery on Apache helicopters this week.

Ground crews are working around the clock to ensure the Apaches are

fueled, loaded and able to fly, so pilots can engage targets using live ammunition when possible.

The 10-day training event is part of the battalion’s annual certification process, said Lt. Col. Cain Baker, battalion commander. It also serves as a culminating event before the unit deploys to Afghanistan in January.

For more on the battalion’s gunnery, read Wednesday’s Fort Hood Herald.
