An FBI investigator on Friday described the barren apartment the accused Fort Hood shooter called home.

Previous testimony from one of Maj. Nidal Hasan’s neighbors showed the 42-year-old Army psychiatrist was divesting himself of his possessions in the days leading up to the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting.

When Special Agent Donna C. Cowling led a team of FBI evidence-gathering specialists to Hasan’s Fourth Street apartment near downtown Killeen, they found few household goods.

“When we made entry, it wasn’t so much what we saw, but what we didn’t see,” Cowling said.

She described a barren apartment with no furniture except a card table. A paper shredder sat in the middle of the living room alongside a prayer rug.

Investigators found evidence consistent with items prosecutors believe Hasan used in the shooting. Agents recovered empty boxes of ammunition from a bedroom, a retail box for a laser sight from a closet and paper towels Hasan may have used to muffle the sound of about 20 handgun magazines he carried in the cargo pocket of his combat uniform during the shooting.

Hasan’s neighbor testified last week that Hasan gave her numerous household items before carrying out the shooting. Both lived at the Las Palmas apartment complex in the 1800 block of North Fourth Street.

Patricia Villa told the court Hasan gave her vegetables, clothes, a suit, some furniture and a briefcase. Prosecutors are making the case that Hasan’s actions prior to the shooting show premeditation, a critical point they must prove to the jury in order to secure the death penalty.
