Col. Michael “Mike” Mulligan is the lead prosecutor in the case against Hasan. Mulligan is the most experienced of all attorneys that have been appointed to the case. The University of Tulsa graduate has tried past death penalty courts-martial including the 2005 trial against Sgt. Hasan Akbar, who was sentenced to the death penalty for killing two soldiers at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait.
Mulligan, a 55-year-old native of Niagara Falls, NY, has already been selected to become Fort Hood’s next staff judge advocate following the conclusion of the court-martial. Past key assignments include serving as deputy staff judge advocate, 7th Army and U.S. Army Europe, staff judge advocate for the 7th Joint Multinational Training Center, Grafenwoehr, Germany, chief of the Trial Counsel Assistance Program in Arlington, Va. and chief of the Criminal Law Division at III Corps and Fort Hood.
