Krueger, a high school athlete from Kiel, Wisc., joined the Army after the Sept. 11 terror attacks. When her mother told her she couldn’t take on Osama bin Laden by herself, Amy replied: “Watch me.”
Krueger was assigned to the 467th Medical Detachment, which is based in Madison, Wisc. When Krueger’s remains arrived in Kiel in November, she was escorted by police cars, Army vehicles and Patriot Guard Riders. People lined the streets for 10 blocks to welcome her home. The detachment’s remaining 43 soldiers departed Fort Hood, where they were mobilized, for Afghanistan exactly one month after Nov. 5.
They wore metal bands on their wrists that were engraved with the names of their fallen friends: Caraveo, Seager and Krueger. Krueger was 29 at the time of her death.
