Memorial ceremony prep

Metal container boxes, stacked three high in some places, are seen in front of III Corps Headquarters at Fort Hood on Monday, April 7, 2014.

A memorial ceremony for the victims of last week’s shooting starts at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sadowski Field near III Corps Headquarters. President Barack Obama will speak at the service, officials said.

All Fort Hood soldiers and their families along with Department of the Army civilians and their families are invited. Due to limited space, access will be on a first-come basis and Defense Department identification is required.

On Monday, containers were erected around III Corps Headquarters. While officials refused comment on the 12-foot security crates, which were stacked three-high in some places, the barricades are similar to security measures used around the judicial center during last year’s trial for 2009 Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Department said Monday the main gate at Fort Hood would be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for the memorial ceremony.
