FORT HOOD — Oliver North will return to Fort Hood on Saturday to sign copies of his latest book, “American Heroes: On the Homefront.”
In this nonfiction book, released Nov. 5, the retired Marine lieutenant colonel presents a “no-holds-barred profile of the dedicated men and women who serve our nation in harm’s way and chronicles what it really means to be a hero.” North follows service members from the battlefield to the homefront and shares their inspirational stories of overcoming adversity.
The book is the final installment to a trilogy on American heroes, he said. The idea behind highlighting military heroes is to share their stories with the general public.
“Outside Fort Hood, you could go 100 miles in any direction and ask people to name somebody in the U.S. military, and maybe two could do it,” North said Tuesday during a phone interview with the Herald. “This is a chance for them to see heroes and their families who have protected us.”
North drew worldwide headlines in the 1980s for his involvement in the Iran-Contra affair while he was a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps.
Aside from his military service, North is known as the host of “War Stories” on the Fox News Channel. He has embedded with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan 57 times.
He also said he hopes the book shows that veterans are quality people and helps reduce veteran unemployment.
“There’s not an E-3 in the Army, Marines, Navy or Air Force, who doesn’t have more responsibility right now on the battlefield than the CEO of AT&T,” he said. “There’s not a CEO in America who’s responsible for the lives of their employees. ... That happens at the lowest level of the U.S. Army.”
North visited Fort Hood last year, as well, to promote a work of fiction titled, “Heroes Proved.”
