WEST FORT HOOD — Scott Spellmon’s wife pinned the rank of brigadier general on his uniform and his daughter uncased the one-star flag, while his two sons stood by his side.

“Thank you for all the sacrifice you all have made that makes days like this possible,” he said to his family during his remarks Friday morning after receiving the promotion.

The ceremony was held outside the headquarters of the U.S. Army Operational Test Command, where Spellmon has served as commander since June.

Maj. Gen. Bryan Watson, vice director of the joint staff in Virginia, hosted the ceremony. He said families like the Spellmons are the real reason leaders get to these crossroads.

“In our world, patches matter. It really defines for us along our journey, the weigh points we’ve had,” Watson said. “They become part of your DNA as you grow in the Army.”
