Fort Hood will be gaining a one-star general and bidding farewell to another, according to a Defense Department announcement of new general officer assignments within the Army.

Brig. Gen. Stephen Twitty will join Fort Hood as the “senior commander.” He is currently serving as the deputy chief of staff for communication for the International Security Assistance Force, United States Forces in Afghanistan.

As a senior mission commander, Twitty will be responsible for the primary mission activity on post, according to Army Regulation 600-20, which describes the position. He will provide executive-level oversight of installation management services to the mission activities and other customers.

There is no timeline for his assumption of responsibility, according to Fort Hood officials.

Replacing Twitty in Afghanistan is Brig. Gen. Laura Richardson, who currently serves as the 1st Cavalry Division’s deputy commander for support.

Richardson took over the position in July from her husband, Brig. Gen. James Richardson, who became the deputy commander of III Corps. He, too, will be traveling to Afghanistan later this year for a deployment with the Phantom Corps.

Laura Richardson’s career has been filled with a series of firsts for women. The former aviator was the first female to serve as the deputy commander of a division within the Army. She was also the first woman to lead the U.S. Army Operational Test Command from June 2011 to July 2012.

An information request to ISAF public affairs to determine if she will be the first woman in her new position was not answered as of press time. She will, however, be the only woman on the current command staff, which includes generals from various allied countries.

Marine Corps Gen. John Allen is the commander of ISAF.

Laura Richardson’s replacement has not been announced, and there is no timeline for her departure, according to division officials.

Brig. Gen. (promotable) Paul E. Funk II, who served as a squadron and brigade commander within the 1st Cavalry Division, as well as with III Corps, was assigned to be commander of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley, Kan. He is currently the deputy commander for operations with 1st Infantry Division/Combined Joint Task Force-1, Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan.
