FORT HOOD — Post and community leaders filled the stands at Cooper Field on Wednesday to see the 1st Cavalry Division's colors cased for a deployment to Afghanistan.

Brig. Gen. Michael Bills and Command Sgt. Maj. Andrew Barteky cased the division's colors, symbolizing its departure from Fort Hood. About 300 soldiers from the division's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion will spend the next nine months as the headquarters of Regional Command South, replacing 4th Infantry Division of Fort Carson, Colo.

"We are trained and ready," Bills said. "There's no better team."
