FORT HOOD — A deputy commander for the 1st Cavalry Division will be promoted to brigadier general Friday in front of the division’s headquarters at Fort Hood.

Col. Robert F. Whittle Jr. will be promoted to the one-star rank during a ceremony beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Whittle has been handling home station duties while staff from the division’s headquarters, including division commander Maj. Gen. John C. Thomson III, have been deployed to Afghanistan since last year.
