FORT HOOD — The 1st Cavalry Division held a ceremony Friday to say goodbye to Brig. Gen. Laura Richardson, the division’s deputy commander of support.

Richardson was the first female in the Army to take such a high-ranking position in a division, when she joined the First Team in July.

“How great of an honor it’s been to live the legend,” she said during her remarks at Cooper Field.

Maj. Gen. Anthony Ierardi, division commander, said Richardson made sure soldiers and leaders performed at the top of their game.

“Our maneuver brigades could not accomplish their mission without her support,” he said. “Thank you for outstanding service and commitment to the division.”

Richardson’s next assignment sends her to Afghanistan, where she will serve as the deputy chief of staff for strategic communication for International Security Assistance Forces.

Col. (promotable) Joseph Martin, current commander of Fort Hood’s Operational Test Command, will assume her position with the division.
