LAGHMAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Fort Hood’s 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, transferred its authority and cased its colors in Afghanistan in preparation to return home soon.

The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, of Fort Polk, La., assumed responsibility as advisers to Afghan National Security Forces in eastern Afghanistan during a ceremony Thursday on Forward Operating Base Gamberi.

The “Long Knife” Brigade served as the first security force assistance brigade in Regional Command-East for the past nine months.

“This is an important mission. For this reason, I leave Afghanistan hopeful,” said Col. William Benson, Long Knife brigade commander. “I would like to give thanks to the (Afghan National Army) leadership for giving us and our team confidence that our efforts were meaningful and that the future of Afghanistan is one of hope and opportunity.”
