The 27th reunion of the VII Corps Desert Storm Veterans Association will be held in Killeen and on Fort Hood this Friday through Sunday.
Normally held in Washington, D.C., this will be the first time the gathering of veterans who served with VII corps during Desert Shield/Desert Storm is held here, said Mark Rado, the association’s current president.
VII Corps was inactivated in Germany in 1992, shortly after the first Gulf War, due to the fall of the Soviet Union, Rado said. With the Cold War at an end, there was no longer a need for a second corps-level unit in Europe.
The reunion will honor the 111 U.S. and United Kingdom soldiers from the corps who died during Desert Storm and provide an opportunity to hand out scholarships to family members of former VII Corps soldiers. Rado said the organization has awarded nearly $425,000 in scholarships since 1996.
