Smoke from a controlled burn at Fort Hood rises behind a south Killeen neighborhood Thursday.

Fort Hood officials said there were two controlled burns going on at the post Thursday: One on West Fort Hood in the southernmost training area; and another on a range north of Cowhouse Creek.

It is common for Fort Hood to do controlled burns on training ranges in the winter. They are prone to grass fires in the summer time.
