Kathy Pyles and her five year old son Sawyer place a wreath on a grave marker at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery during the annual Wreaths for Vets on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016.

The wreath retrieval scheduled for Saturday at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery has been postponed due to weather concerns.

According to Jean Shine, founder and president of the Friends of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, weather may be an issue Saturday and could cause mold or mildew damage to the wreaths if stored wet. Retrieval will now occur Jan. 21 at the cemetery at 10 a.m.

The Friends of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery still needs volunteers Jan. 21 to help retrieve the thousands of wreaths placed at the cemetery.

The nearly 6,000 holiday wreaths were placed by volunteers on individual graves Nov. 26. It is now time to remove the wreaths and prepare them for storage until next year, Shine said.

There is no registration to participate and parking will be available at the cemetery.

Additional parking is provided for the wreath retrieval at the Texas A&M Central Texas University campus. Buses run from 8:45 a.m. through noon to ensure everyone can safely and easily park and participate in the ceremony

The veterans cemetery is located at 11463 State Highway 195 in Killeen.

This is an annual ceremony and the need for volunteers grows year after year. The Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery opened in 2006 and currently is the resting place for approximately 7,200 veterans and family members. The cemetery serves a 100-mile radius which includes veterans in 44 counties.

The Friends of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery is a non-profit organization that raises funds and donations to support the purchase, laying and storage of holiday wreaths for the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
