Texas A&M University-Central Texas invited local job seekers to meet potential employers at its 2013 job and internship fair.

The fair, held Tuesday at the university’s Founder’s Hall inaugural building, hosted more than 34 representatives from companies at the local, state and national levels. Vendors included the Texas Department of Public Safety, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the Temple Independent School District and Veterans Affairs. The event was free for university students and staff and $5 for non-student members of the public.

“We looked for a variety of companies who are looking for employees and interns with college degrees,” said Greg Griffith, career services coordinator for A&M University-Central Texas.

Resumes taken

Visiting employers handed out information and applications, took resumes and met face to face with job candidates.

Jo Ann Newton, representing the Boy & Girls Club of Greater Central Texas, said that human interaction is an important part of the hiring process.

“It helps you get a feel for what the person is like, and how they interact with others,” said Newton, whose organization is looking for counselors for a new pilot program.

“When you are hiring someone to work with kids, that is very important.”

A steady stream of hopefuls moved from table to table. Stephan Key, a local resident, described the current job market as “competitive,” even for those with college degrees.

“Everyone is competing for these jobs, and (employers) are looking for very specific qualifications,” said Key, who is interested in a career as a paralegal. “There’s so much competition, and it seems like the only things out there are just jobs that pay minimum wage.”

The university plans to hold its next job and internship fair in March.
