The Killeen Independent School District is preparing to hire a second-in-command, and more than two dozen people have applied.
The district confirmed Wednesday that 27 people applied for the assistant superintendent post by the April 29 deadline.
Whoever is selected will replace Deputy Superintendent Bobby Ott, who announced his resignation Jan. 18.
Ott was hired in April 2009 and had previously worked in a similar position with the Copperas Cove Independent School District.
He holds a doctorate, but the posted job description for the assistant superintendent position requires the candidate only have a master's degree. Applicants also must have a principal's certification, five years of principal experience, and prior administration and supervisory experience. The assistant superintendent will make anywhere from $104,000 to $123,000 annually, plus benefits.
Twenty-four of the candidates are from outside the district, according to information from the human resources department. Whoever is chosen must live within the district.
In January, the Herald reported details of an online conversation between Ott and Harker Heights resident Barbara Schindler, in which Ott asked to use Schindler's home address as his residence for district purposes and requested multiple times that she keep the matter quiet.
A clause in Ott's employment contract required him to live within the school district.
When questioned about the conversation, Ott said he asked to use Schindler's address because he was considering a "dual-residency" situation due to changes at his wife's job that would cause a longer commute.
Shortly after the article was published, the district's school board met in closed session Jan. 16 to discuss matters relating to Ott's "employment and residency," according to the meeting's agenda. Ott resigned days later.
At the time, district superintendent Robert Muller stated Ott's departure was prompted by "a change in personal circumstances."
Ott is set to leave his post in June, and Muller will have the final say on his replacement.
As of Wednesday, no timeline had been set for the hiring decision.
