COPPERAS COVE — Expansion plans for Attic Breeze, a solar attic fan company just south of Gatesville, and its possible local impact dominated part of the Coryell County Economic Development Board’s discussion Friday.

County Judge John Firth told members of the EDB who were present for the meeting that after moving operations to Coryell County from Harris County two years ago, Attic Breeze experienced enough success in Gatesville that they are looking at doubling their manufacturing space and adding 10 to 15 jobs.

“The commissioners court approved a tax abatement for the expansion of Attic Breeze,” Firth said. “The county is very interested in creating jobs. It really does help everybody. We want to continue to get the word out that Coryell County is open for business.”

Expanding Farm-to-Market 116, the main road between Copperas Cove and Gatesville on which Attic Breeze’s facilities are located, also came up in the discussion.

Construction on the U.S. Highway 190 bypass is already making developers look at the lesser-developed areas between the two cities, Firth said.

“As individuals realize the access of the 116 corridor, it’s going to be a real stimulus,” he said. “There are going to be huge development opportunities as everybody realizes this is a gold mine, with the easy access to Fort Hood and 190.”

The expansion of city limits — Copperas Cove northward and Gatesville southward — over the last few years also has government entities examining water lines and other infrastructure.

Attic Breeze, for example, experiences a problem with water pressure because of its location on a hill.

The possibility of water supply companies joining forces to better serve development along FM 116 was considered.

“Water will become the biggest economic hindrance in the future,” Firth said.
