Red and Silver Central Texas Expos is hosting a back-to-school event from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at B&K Pawn in Killeen.

Tim Ferch, business manager of the group, said the event will feature live music, a school supply giveaway and barbecue.

During the event, the Killeen Fire Department will recognize Staff Sgt. Lupe Maldonado, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. Maldonado was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in April.

“My hopes are to draw a good crowd and get Lupe Maldanado known in the Killeen area,” Ferch said. “The fire chief is going to present him with an American flag and a certificate.”

Ferch said this is the fourth event the group plans to host since it launched in May.

“It’s going to be hot, so I want everybody to just enjoy themselves and have a good time,” he said. “We are still trying to make our name and this is going to help us with that.”

Ferch said he hopes residents have a good time during the “Smokn’ Hot Back to School with Lupe” event.

“Every time that we (have) an event, we showcase something; we provide a theme and a cause (to support),” he said.
