LAMPASAS — The first Paws for a Cause fundraiser benefiting the Lampasas Animal Shelter kicks off Friday with a bake sale at Walmart.

Paws for a Cause, slated for April 27, will feature low-cost vaccinations, heartworm testing, de-worming and a microchip clinic sponsored by veterinarian Kelli Isom, along with a silent auction, grooming clinic, dog training clinic, “Doggie Biscuit Bar,” food and other activities. Educational materials will be available for people who want to learn about becoming an adoptive pet parent.

Animal shelter supervisor Kasey Dressell was first approached with the fundraising idea by Walmart managers, who suggested a dog walking event. That idea evolved into the full-scale Paws for a Cause fundraiser.

“A dog walk is something a lot of rescue groups do to raise money,” Dressell said. “People bring their pets to the walk as a symbolic show of support for the homeless animals. It often includes owners who have adopted their pets, but all of our activities are open for community participation.”

Event organizers sought donations from the community to offset the costs of printing flyers and providing T-shirts. Dressell said their budget goals were exceeded by the overwhelming response.

“So far, we’ve raised almost $2,300,” she said. “Now, every additional donation can be used solely for the purpose of the shelter.”

The bake sale is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Lampasas Walmart, 1700 Central Texas Expressway.
