BELTON — The Bell County Commissioners Court voted Monday to accept a Texas traffic safety program grant agreement.

According to the agreement, the Texas Department of Transportation would provide $29,424 to allow the county to pay law enforcement agents extra hours on certain holiday weekends to patrol highways and roads for infractions, including speeding and drunken driving.

Chuck Cox, Bell County Sheriff’s Department chief deputy, said TxDOT approached the county to apply for the grant because of its high volume of traffic crashes and alcohol-related violations. The grant is the STEP program, which stands for Strategic Traffic Enforcement. The grant is integrated with the Drink, Drive, Go to Jail Campaign.

The funds allow extra patrols during spring break, Fourth of July and Labor Day holidays, Cox said.

In other business, commissioners authorized the county auditor to advertise bids for the upgrade of the electrical, mechanical and structural systems to support the expansion of the computer room at the Bell County 911 Communication Center.

A contract was awarded to CF Metals Inc. for county repairs and improvements.

The next court meeting is set for 9 a.m. Monday at the Historic Bell County Courthouse on Central Avenue in Belton.
