BELTON - Waste Management customers will see an addition to their garbage service early next year - household hazardous waste pickup.

Among the items that fall into that category are paint, automobile oil and pool chemicals.

Flammable products, such as gasoline, are excluded.

The extra service was approved Tuesday during the council meeting, following a presentation by Terry Woodson, the company's director of

governmental affairs.

Woodson said the cost to the city for basic service and hazardous waste pickup will be $15.05 per household.

Customers will receive information about the new service in the mail.

The basic service and hazardous waste component are part of a new three-year contract, which was approved by the council Tuesday night.

The contract also includes two one-year renewal options.

While Mayor Pro Tem Marion Grayson favored adding hazardous waste pickup to the city's services, she also voiced dissatisfaction about Waste Management's job performance.

Saying she's heard complaints about inconsistency in garbage pickup, including in her own neighborhood, Grayson suggested the company make improvements to its collection services before the contract with the city comes up again for renewal.

Woodson assured Grayson she would pass that message along to company officials.
