TEMPLE — Thomas Biodiesel LLC will construct a 25,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on a 7-acre tract at the Temple Economic Development Corporation’s North Industrial Park in the coming months.
The company said the biodiesel manufacturing facility will have a projected capital investment of $30 million, and will provide 30 full-time jobs. The plant will be on the east side of Eberhardt Road.
“Our community is an ideal manufacturing and distribution location for companies that design or develop their technologies and products in Austin,” said Charley Ayres, vice president of Temple EDC. “Taking advantage of more than just our proximity to the metro area, Thomas Biodiesel is one of many companies that have found a benefit from the talent, cost and infrastructure of Temple.”
Thomas will manufacture biodiesel from waste cooking oils and other sources at the Temple plant. It is projected to generate 9 million gallons of biodiesel per year.
“With a design capacity of 9 million gallons per year of biodiesel, we are positioned to serve customers in this local market as well as the larger metroplex areas of Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio,” Thomas CEO Bill Burden said. “We are providing green jobs, and we are excited to partner with other progressive companies doing business here.”
Burden worked with Temple EDC to determine a location for the business.
Biodiesel is currently the only commercially available fuel approved by the Environmental Protection Agency as an advanced biofuel, Burden said.
Relative to petroleum diesel, it reduces lifecycle greenhouse gases by up to 86 percent, lowers particulate matter by 47 percent and reduces hydrocarbon emissions by 67 percent.
On Dec. 17, the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the issuance of a conditional-use permit that would support the arrival of the biodiesel plant in Temple.
There are performance standards in place the business would need to adhere to, including noise constraints.
The Temple City Council will need to approve the issuance of the permit before it can be distributed.
