BELTON - The Belton Independent School District board of trustees voted unanimously Monday to approve Dr. Susan Kincannon, deputy superintendent, to succeed Dr. Vivian Baker as superintendent when Baker retires in December.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my work with Dr. Baker. We've done a lot of great work," Kincannon said. "I'm sad about losing my partner, but I look forward to serving you."

This will be Kincannon's 10th year in the district. She began as principal of Belton Intermediate School in July 2000 and held the position for two years.

For the next five years, she was assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, and then, in June 2007, was named deputy superintendent.

Kincannon has 20 years of experience in public education, and has worked as an elementary and middle school teacher and as a principal at elementary and secondary levels.

"We've studied this choice and watched Susan and really noticed her diplomacy in handling difficult situations," said board member Connie Demerson. "Susan is a go-getter."

Board president Randy

Pittenger said the choice was obvious when observing the partnership between Baker and Kincannon.

"We want to continue the successes we've had and meet the goals that have been set," Pittenger said.

Baker said her work with Kincannon and the rest of the administration and staff is what makes the district work well.

"We all join hands all the time to hold this district up for the children," Baker said. "I think we all have feet of clay and we need each other to lead strong organizations."

Baker will remain superintendent until Jan. 1.
