GATESVILLE – The Coryell County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers are investigating a body found at a vacant home at the intersection of Farm-to-Market 116 and FM 1783 by a passerby Tuesday morning.

Today, investigators release the name of the victim, 57-year-old John Henry Howard Jr., of Copperas Cove, is said to have been released from jail May 31.

The sheriff's office received the call about 10 a.m. after a passerby discovered the body of a 50-year-old man.

According to the sheriff's office, the death is being investigated as suspicious.

The body was found at a vacant home that was once a convenience store.

Glenda Truscott, a neighbor who stopped at the scene, said the area is pretty quiet.

"It's scary that things like that are going on here," she said.

Another neighbor, Lynn Freeman, said the discovery took her breath away.

"I've noticed the back door has been opened, but never really paid any attention to it," Freeman said.

The case is still under investigation. Read more in tomorrow's Killeen Daily Herald.
