Twenty-eight-year-old Cassie Sulfridge’s stage 4 lymphoma was diagnosed at the same time she suffered a stroke earlier this year.

Then her mom, entrepreneur Connie Yu of San Diego, became a new owner in Bricks 4 Kidz, a family-friendly program where children, ages 3 and older, and adults of all ages get to design and build machines and buildings using Lego bricks, gears and motors.

Yu teamed up with the greater Killeen/Fort Hood chapter of Bricks 4 Kidz via her daughter, Jacquie Fisher, who lives in Killeen.

In honor of her daughter, Yu created Cassie’s Bricks4Lymphoma, a fundraiser benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society set for Jan. 18at Hillside Ministries in Killeen.

“The connection is all about families,” Yu said. “I wanted to have an event to raise awareness about blood cancer and teach children important learning skills in a fun environment.”

During the fundraiser, hands-on Legos activities will teach engineering, architecture and math concepts, and help develop their critical thinking skills. Parents and children can also attend a health and resource fair and watch a robotics demonstration.

When approached by Yu, Pastor Angel Valencia of Hillside Ministries agreed to allow his church be the host site for Bricks4Lymphoma.

He and his congregation of about 100 support the fundraiser, which may become an annual event.

“It is always good for a church to be supportive of a positive organizations,” Valencia said.

Registration for the event is available online at http://bricks4causes.com. If unable to attend in person, participants can register as virtual builders and design and build from their home computers.

All builders, virtual, individual and team and all ages, including adults, are welcome to participate.

The cost is $15 through Jan. 4 and $20 after Jan. 4.

Registration on event day, Jan. 18, begins at 7:30 a.m., check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the building competition starts at 9:30 a.m.

Hillside Ministries is at 3601 Edgefield Drive, Killeen.

For information, call Connie Yu at 858-442-2168.
