BELTON — Bell County commissioners unanimously approved a measure to reduce the speed limit, from 50 mph to 45 mph, along 2 miles of Old Howard Road. The vote was cast at the commissioners’ meeting Monday morning.

The impacted stretch of road runs from the edge of Temple’s city limits, which is right around the intersection with Moores Mill Road, to the intersection with Farm-to-Market 1237.

County Judge Jon Burrows said the reduction was necessary to bring the speed limit more in line with the posted speed inside Temple’s city limits.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Bill Schumann, who represents the area, said the reduction was necessary and supported by area residents. “I got to watch a kid nearly kill himself out there. He was driving 60 mph, texting, and he hit a mailbox and went through a fence.”
