The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service announced the opening of the community garden in Gatesville for the spring growing season.

The garden is designed for new or experienced gardeners who wish to grow their own vegetables, learn more about gardening and become healthier through better eating habits.

The community garden officially opens Saturday with a garden workday and plot assignments. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. The community garden is next to the post office on Leon Street in Gatesville.

All participants are responsible for assisting with preparation, upkeep and general assistance in the garden throughout the growing season. Limited supplies of seeds and plants are available for those unable to provide their own. Plots are limited to two per person and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All participants must sign a gardening agreement that outlines the rules and guidelines for using the garden. Those wanting to reserve a plot must do so before Saturday by calling (254) 865-2414.
