Residents came out to the Town Square Shopping Center on Saturday morning for the Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful Trash-off.

“We believe in volunteering and this isn’t our first year at the Trash-off cleanup,” Lelani Wilson said. “We were at the Avenue D site on the north side of the tracks picking up trash because we want to teach (our 5-year-old son Silas) about being a good citizen.”

Killeen will participate in the annual Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off on Saturday and needs volunteers.

Last year, 566 volunteers in Killeen collected more than 8,500 pounds of trash, according to Keep Killeen Beautiful.

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Killeen Community Center, 2201 E. Veterans Memorial Blvd., before spreading out to clean up sites across the city. The event will end at 11:30 a.m. at the Killeen Community Center with lunch and prizes.
