Fort Hood officials released Friday the name of a soldier who died from an apparent gunshot wound Monday while on leave in Lexington, N.C. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.

Spc. Matthew Scott Patton, 23, of Bristol, R.I., entered the military in August 2008 as a motor transport operator. He arrived at Fort Hood in February 2011 and was assigned to 154th Transportation Company, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command.

Patton deployed to Afghanistan from October 2009 to October 2010.

His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and NATO Medal.
