A Fort Hood soldier arrested in connection with a shooting death was formally charged with murder, post officials announced Friday.

Sgt. Brett Marvin Wessell, 26, was charged with murder and assault with the intent to commit murder Thursday in the death of retired Sgt. Ryan F. Dickinson, a Fort Hood release stated. He is currently in custody of the Army.

Wessel, of Leavenworth, Kan., joined the Army in July 2008 and is currently assigned to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. He deployed to Iraq from December 2009 to December 2010.

On Sunday, authorities arrested Wessel in connection with a shooting that occurred at a West Fort Hood residence.

The last time a murder occurred on post was Sept. 26, 2010.
