A backpack filled with chemicals commonly used to make methamphetamine was found Tuesday night behind a vacant hotel in Killeen, police said.

The backpack was found around 10:30 p.m. by a security guard who was patrolling around the former Howard Johnson Inn in the 800 block of East Central Texas Expressway, said Carroll Smith, Killeen police spokeswoman.

A hazmat crew was called in to collect the meth ingredients, which can be highly volatile. The backpack was found outside, behind the hotel, and there was no sign the empty hotel had been broken into, Smith said.
