The Tonkawa Chapter of the Native Plant Society is sponsoring a field trip to a tall grass prairie just north of Temple.
The group will meet at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the Natural Grocer in Temple off Interstate 35 Exit 300/Loop 363 and caravan to the Burleson Prairie just north of Temple.
Anyone who knows how to get to the tall grass prairie may meet the group there at 9 a.m.
Bob and Mickey Burleson received the Lone Star Land Steward Award in 2008 for converting former cropland and overgrazed pasture in Bell County back to tall grass prairie. The Burlesons collected and planted local ecotype native seed from area hay meadow prairie remnants, removed invasive plants and used various management tools in the successful restoration of the prairie.
Experience the vanishing tall grass prairie and the blooming pitcher sage. Bring friends, sunscreen, bug repellent, water and a hat.
