Due to the government shutdown and closure of all Army Corps of Engineers lakes in Central Texas, the eighth annual Fishing for Freedom bass tournament was canceled, board member Cliff Brown announced Tuesday.

The event is free for service members. In the past eight years, more than 1,658 active-duty and former soldiers fished in the tournament.

The tournament was a way to thank military personnel for their service and build fellowship between the troops and local residents, Brown said.

Board members regret the event had to be canceled, Brown said.
