TEMPLE — A candlelight vigil and fundraiser Tuesday evening at Ferguson Park honored the life of a 2-year-old Temple girl, Je’vaeh Mayes, who died in what the toddler’s aunt called a “tragedy” after a pit bull attacked her Monday in the backyard of her family’s home.

“Her parents are handling this as best as any parent can,” said Alicia McGinnis, Je’vaeh’s aunt. “It’s a tragedy. Her mother did everything right.”

The child reportedly went into the backyard where a mother pit bull and her two puppies were being kept for a family friend. After the attack, Je’vaeh was rushed to the hospital but died there.

The three dogs were picked up by Animal Control Services and quarantined, police said.
