Best Western coming to Lampasas

The site of a new Best Western is seen in Lampasas adjacent to another motel, the County Inn.

LAMPASAS — Plans are under review and all that’s left are a few stamps of approval for business co-owners Sanjay and D.C. Patel to begin construction on a new 50-unit hotel in town.

The brothers-in-law plan to build a franchise hotel, a Best Western Plus, near their existing motel complex, The Country Inn.

“We hope to start construction soon,” Sanjay Patel said. “We noticed Lampasas doesn’t have a franchise hotel chain, and this property will appeal to a completely different market and clientele.”

The new hotel will feature a business center, meeting room and indoor pool. The property will be built right behind The Country Inn on the U.S. Highway 190 spur, off U.S. Highway 183.

The Country Inn has been in business for almost 25 years. The Patels bought the facility and two additional acres in 2006 and renovated the 43-room motel in 2010. The Patels also own motel properties in Goldthwaite, Hico, Mason and San Saba.

“This will be the only branded motel in Lampasas,” City Manager Finley deGraffenried said. “We’re in a deficit for rooms, and I think this will be very successful.”

Jerry Bunting, the city’s building official, has been reviewing the motel plans. Construction could start in the next month or two, once the approval and permitting processes are complete, deGraffenried said.

“We see it as a positive in terms of hotel/motel revenue and what it will offer those who visit Lampasas,” he said. “Projects like this usually provide a pretty good economic punch to the community.”

Patel said the construction phase should last about nine months, with a grand opening tentatively set for spring 2014. They hope to employ a staff of at least 10 people.
