HARKER HEIGHTS – Two of the five City Council candidates filed the eight-day pre-election reports by Thursday.

Spencer Smith, a Place 5 candidate, and Sam Murphey, a Place 2 candidate, were the only ones who filed their finance reports for their campaigns in the city.

Since the 30-day pre-election report submitted on April 9, Smith raised an additional $700, making a total of $1,450 raised during his campaign, Smith's campaign financial reports stated.

Smith's campaign has spent about $1,358 during the same time period, mostly on advertisements with local newspapers, his reports stated.

Murphey's campaign raised an additional $450, which bought the campaign's total to $2,750, his financial campaign report stated.

Since the previous report, $291 has been spent on Murphey's campaign, his report stated. A total of $1,891 has been spent by his campaign.

Place 5 candidates Robert Tucker and Steven Hoskins did not file. Tucker claimed no money raised or spent at the April 9 deadline. He still hasn't raised or spent any money on the campaign, Tucker said.

Hoskins said he didn't file a finance report on April 9 because he hasn't raised or spent $500 for his campaign. According to campaign rules set by the Texas Ethics Commission, candidates who have raised or spent less than $500 may choose not to file a 30-day pre-election finance report or an eight-day pre-election report.

At the deadline for filing the eight-day pre-election report, Hoskins still had not spent more than $500 on the campaign, he said.

James Sutton Sr., a Place 2 candidate who has not filed his campaign finance report yet, said he has raised $450 and spent $1,450 on his campaign.
