NOLANVILLE - The city will sponsor an after-school carnival for the Friends of the Nolanville Park on June 5 in the city park; the City Council approved the action Thursday.
Strings were wound a little tight for members of the Friends of the Nolanville Park, as the council discussed why the city had to sponsor the event on the Friends' behalf.
The concern was that as a nonprofit, the Friends do not have insurance to cover any accidents that might occur on the inflatable bounce houses, Councilwoman Christina Rosenthal said.
Four inflatable bounce houses are being donated for use at the carnival, Friends president Marry Simmons said.
"It is not just protecting the city, it is also protecting you from being sued," Rosenthal said, speaking to the Friends. "We are trying to take care of you."
The council also permitted the Friends to allow people who can't have garage sales on their property to use the city park as a location to host garage sales this weekend.
Public Works Director Bob Pena expressed concern about the garage sale being at the park because of a lack of facilities, and he also wanted to make sure the park would be cleaned.
People have used the park for several hours at a time and not worried about bathrooms, Mayor Charlie Stewart said.
"The Friends of the Nolanville Park will pick up after the garage sales," Friends vice president Tom Constant said.
Even though permission was given to the Friends for all of their programs, some members still left a bit confounded.
"I think we are going to fight tooth and nail to get any improvements in the park, and we will," Constant said.
