Killeen fire

Firefighters are seen outside a Killeen home that caught fire Monday, May 6, 2013. Two cats died in the fire.

A house cat owes its life to firefighters after it nearly died during a fire Monday evening in northeast Killeen.

Firefighters resuscitated the cat after they found it not breathing in a home in the 3500 block of Crescent Drive.

Using equipment from the Humane Society, firefighters managed to give the cat oxygen and save its life.

Two cats did die in the fire, which caused a large amount of smoke inside the home. No humans were injured.

Deputy Fire Chief Brian Brank said the fire began in the kitchen of the home and caused heavy damage there. The rest of the home suffered salvageable damage, mostly from exposure to smoke.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. One woman was inside when the fire began at 4:45 p.m.
