The carnival rides are taking shape along W.S. Young Drive, just in time for the Celebrate Killeen Festival, which begins today.
The free festival begins with a kickoff party from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Green Avenue Farmers Market, 717 N. Second St.
Benton Goodnight, chairman of the Celebrate Killeen Committee, said the festival highlight this year may be the first night, which includes free food, vendors and a live concert by Funk Factory.
“There’s something for everybody at this event,” Goodnight said.
Today’s events will take place at the Killeen Community Center, 2201 E. Veterans Memorial Blvd., with a free concert by the GTOs.
Extra parking will be available Saturday behind the Killeen Independent School District Administration building, which will provide shuttle services.
Events begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with the Celebrate Killeen 5K run and entertainment, food, inflatables, a petting zoo and hayrides available between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Weather permitting, the outdoor movie event will feature “Iron Man 2” at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Goodnight said it is the first year Celebrate Killeen has featured a carnival — the only part of the festival that costs money. The rest is funded through contributions raised by the Celebrate Killeen Committee.
“Killeen is a young community and everybody makes a living off this community and this is a chance to give something back,” Goodnight said.
