NOLANVILLE — Runners braved the chilly Saturday morning air to race in the Cheetah Dash 5k at R.E. Cavazos Elementary School in Nolanville.

“All of the money goes back to the school’s activity fund to pay for field trips for every grade,” said Amy Salas, PTO president. “Our goal is to bring the community together to raise money for the school.”

Fifth-grader Chase Rinehart called the race awesome.

“I love running and the best part was beating my aunt today.”

His aunt, Lynda Roberts, a counselor at the school, complimented the safe course.

“I like how the Nolanville police were posted along the route,” she said. “Big, bright signs lined the route so no one got lost.”

About 34 people — ages 5 to 70 — participated in the race. Cingne Sambula, 15, was the first male to cross the finish line. First place for a female went to Sharette Garcia, who was eager to support the school and her children.

“I try to run often to stay in shape and keep motivating my son to stay healthy,” Garcia said.

Business donations totaled $400 and registration fees brought in $150, said Bonita Henderson, PTO treasurer.

More than a dozen volunteers were on hand to help with the registration, mark the route and hand out bottled water and bananas.

Children received participation rewards, and the first 40 adults received T-shirts. The finishing times ranged from 18 to 50 minutes.

“The PTO has gone above and beyond to make our first 5k a big success,” said Marcie Murphy, assistant principal.

“We know what runners are looking for next year.”

The youngest runner, 5-year-old Cara Bouteller, felt a big sense of accomplishment after finishing the run.

“It was cool and fun,” she said.
