Residents sang gospel music Saturday for neighborhoods surrounding the Temple of Faith Apostolic Ministries to hear during the church’s first Praise in the Streets event.

Kathy Kirkland, co-pastor, said more than 50 people stopped by throughout the day.

Elder Mark Kirkland, pastor of the church, said the event was a way to reach out to the community, build up residents’ spirits and remind them there is hope.

“We’re here to impact the community, especially this neighborhood,” he said. “There’s a lot of impoverished, homeless and needy people in this area.”

Kirkland said his goal is to make a positive impact on the community surrounding the church.

“We don’t stay within the boundaries of the four walls of the church,” he said. “We get out into the community, knock on doors, hand out fliers and free clothes — those are ways we can help do our part.”

Latese Jamison, church secretary, said she wants residents to know they can find comfort in the church.

“A friend is not too far away,” she said. “If they need someone to talk to, we’re here from 6 in the morning until 6 p.m.”

Mark Kirkland said this was the biggest Praise in the Streets event the church has hosted.

“We’ll probably do this again once the fall months kick in,” he said.
