City of Killeen officials said a wastewater overflow occurred this afternoon in the area of 38th Street and the overflow entered the creek in Long Branch Park and subsequently Nolan Creek. Nolan Creek flows east through Harker Heights, Nolanville and Belton.

Crews are currently working to stop the flow and repair the system, according to a city news release issued around 7:30 p.m.

Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulations require notification of the public of overflows in excess of 100,000 gallons.  This overflow has exceeded 100,000 gallons, the release stated.

People should take the following precautions in waterways east of 38th Street:

  • Don’t swim in affected area streams, ponds or lakes.
  • Always wash hands thoroughly before preparing or eating food.
  • Always wash hands thoroughly after any contact with animals, soil, or diapers.
  • Private well owners may wish to treat their well water, have their well water tested and inspect their wells for proper siting, construction and maintenance.
