LAMPASAS — City Manager Finley deGraffenried, Councilman Christian Toups and other city officials will head to California next week to attend an economic development conference in hopes of recruiting businesses to relocate to Texas, deGraffenried told the City Council on Monday.

The Lampasas Economic Development Corporation recently approved funding for the trip, with partial support provided by the governor’s office in an effort to highlight Lampasas and Central Texas business opportunities.

“It’s our hope to at least have contact with as many as 50 or 60 businesses,” deGraffenried said.

Two representatives from the governor’s economic development board will accompany them on the trip, along with Mike Jones, local business newcomer.

Jones is in the process of relocating his trucking and heavy equipment company from Merced, Calif., to Lampasas and will soon open his Texas operations base under the name Lampasas Trucking and Ready Mix.

In other business, the council agreed to sponsor the second annual Paws for a Cause fundraiser benefitting the Lampasas Animal Shelter, at the request of Shelter Director Kasey Dressell.

“Last year, we worked with the Friends of the Lampasas Animal Shelter and Walmart and raised just under $13,000,” she said.

“That was money we used to build two additional play yards and another pen we use for livestock. This year ... we’re hoping to raise money to put into a medical fund for animals,” Dressell said.

Paws for a Cause is scheduled for April 26 at W.M. Brook Park in Lampasas.

The council also approved $47,416 for infrastructure work in the public utilities department and gave its approval of the final reading of an ordinance to close half of the alley in the A.H. Barnes addition, enabling city officials to complete the sale of the old fire station vacated earlier this year.
